Mississippi River Coordinating Council Formed

Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn announced the creation of the Mississippi River Coordinating Council (MRCC) this summer. The Lieutenant Governor has seen firsthand the positive impact of bringing together citizens and river enthusiasts with state and federal agencies, and sought to create a Coordinating Council on the Mississippi River.

This summer and fall, the Lieutenant Governor asks for your ideas, concerns, and suggestions on how to proceed with the MRCC responsibilities.

The MRCC will oversee and coordinate policies on the Mississippi River and its tributaries for ecological and economic interests of the state. Much like the successful Illinois River Coordinating Council, the Mississippi River Coordinating Council will work to review current programs, create new programs, and bring state and federal funding to the Mississippi and its tributary watersheds.

Representation on the Council will include private citizens associated with agriculture, business, conservation and local communities as well as state and federal agencies responsible for the Mississippi River.

In order for the Council to be successful and driven by watershed stakeholder interests, the Lieutenant Governor’s Office has created an on-line survey on the Clean Water website (www.CleanWater.il.gov). Visit the MRCC "Get Involved" sub page to participate in the survey and view other information on the MRCC. Staff will compile these concerns and issues for internal use in our office. Any information provided to us will be kept confidential, unless you would like us to follow up with any of your concerns.

We look forward to your participation and your comments.

Thank you for your time.
