COUNTY ROAD PROTECTION PROGRAM

In cooperation with Township Road Commissioners, the Adams County Highway Department and landowners, the Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District offers a program to protect township and county roads from damages due to sediment and water runoff.  Problems addressed are road ditches filling up with sediment, sediment deposited on roads, gullies on road right-of-way, and water runoff damaging roads and creating safety hazards.  The Adams County SWCD will provide cost-share assistance for the installation of conservation practices at a 60% rate, and landowners will provide the remaining 40%.  Funding for this project is provided by the Adams County Board and the Adams County SWCD.  In order to be eligible for this program, the township road commissioner or county highway department must identify the area as a problem.   SWCD staff will then provide recommendations for solving the problem along with a cost estimate.  If the project is eligible for funding and is feasible, it will be approved for cost-share assistance, based on funding availabilty.  Landowners are required to maintain the conservation practice for it's lifespan, generally ten years.

The public benefits of this project greatly outweigh the costs.   Townships and the county save dollars by not having to clean sediment from road ditches and off of the roads.  They also benefits by eliminating water runoff damages to roads.  Landowners benefit by controlling soil erosion on their land, and the public in general benefits by reducing costs of maintaining roads.
